New entrant awarded top grade from BRCGS for innovative rapeseed oil refinery

  • Only UK producer of pressed food-grade rapeseed oil, made without solvents.

  • Low carbon footprint with facility powered by its own renewable energy centre.

  • Brexit-proof business model dedicated to supporting UK agriculture, exclusively buying domestic rapeseed.

7th November 2019 – Yelo Enterprises has launched the UK’s only mechanically-pressed refined rapeseed oil having received the highest grade possible from the BRC Global Standard for food safety. The “AA” grade was confirmed by the BRCGS after Yelo’s first Food Safety Standard audit was completed in September. This milestone now enables Yelo to increase its production and supply refined oil more widely into the UK’s food ingredient and manufacturing sectors.

Commenting on the decision from the BRCGS, Kevin Ball, CEO of Yelo, said:This AA rating from BRCGS is exactly what we were aiming for. To achieve it with our first ever audit is a testament to the great team we have put together at Yelo, and our commitment to food safety and product quality.”

The food safety audit was a rigorous assessment of our state-of-the-art vegetable oil refinery and our bulk tanker loading facilitiesadds Carlo Matos, Operations Director at Yelo. “This allows us to increase our refinery output towards its full capacity. Our refinery is the 3rd largest of its kind in the UK and we can supply up to 20% of the UK’s food grade rapeseed oil demand.”

Before embarking on the first new build integrated rapeseed crushing and refining facility in the UK for 40 years, Yelo took a step back and analysed the established industry profit model based on maximising oil extraction from the seed.

UK rapeseed contains high levels of oil which can be recovered partially by squeezing the seed in mechanical presses, or more fully extracted by dissolving the oil out the seed using hexane, a petrochemical solvent. The multinationals dominating global oilseed processing have universally adopted the chemical option. This deprives consumers of choice as to the level of processing embedded in a wide range of oils, subsequently used in everyday food products. Soybean, sunflower and rapeseed oils sold in the UK today are predominantly sourced from solvent-based facilities.

In contrast, Yelo has opted to only use mechanical presses. This conscious decision leaves more of the high value oil in the remaining solid fraction that is subsequently sold as animal feed.

Commenting on Yelo’s commitment to sustainability and its solvent-free process, Kevin Ball added: “We are committed to minimal processing and we believe this future-proofs our business. Everyone is more informed about food production and over-processing rarely provides health benefits. Removing the solvent step from the process has also allowed us to build a greener and safer operation.”

As we have set out to produce food and feed products from rapeseed with the lowest carbon footprint, it was not tenable to adopt a technology that puts a fossil fuel derived solvent at the heart of the process. Furthermore, a solvent which can end up either being released to atmosphere or trace amounts potentially remaining in some of the products.” adds Ball.

True to their commitment to sustainability, Yelo has also invested in technology to generate its own heat and power requirements from renewable energy.

We have already had great feedback on our pressed refined rapeseed oil. It’s an ideal ingredient in products such as mayonnaise and butter spreads, as well as being widely used in food and snack production. This certification will extend our reach into all these markets. And at a time when the world is facing a climate crisis, we are producing high quality animal feed and a vegetable oil with a low carbon footprint, that will reduce imports and, at the same time, support British agricultureconcludes Kevin Ball.

NovaPro early adopter shares soya reduction results

2018 Gold Cup Winner, Metcalfe Farms, show positive results from including NovaPro in its feed regime.

Stratford-upon-Avon, 26th of September – Metcalfe Farms are among the early adopters of the new high energy rumen-protected protein, NovaPro™, launched earlier this year by Yelo Enterprises Ltd. Metcalfe Farms have been steadily reducing their hipro soya feeding rates and are now using a 68% NovaPro™, 32% Soya ratio. The 525ha dairy farm consists of 1,300 pedigree Holsteins and is based in Leyburn in North Yorkshire. The business, owned and run by Philip and his two brothers Brian and David Metcalfe, was the recipient of the prestigious NMR RABDF 2018 Gold Cup.

NovaPro™ has given us an opportunity to reduce our soya footprint and adopt a homegrown source of protein and energy. We started integrating it into the ration about 4 months ago and are gradually reducing our hipro soya inclusion,” says Philip Metcalfe.

Dr Anna Sutcliffe, the KW nutritionist overseeing the reformulation of the ration says: “NovaPro™ has cost-effectively replaced hipro soya in the ration maintaining milk yield and constituents to expectation. We are also seeing reduced milk urea levels indicating improved nitrogen efficiency”.

The comparative milk performance of feed regimes based on rapeseed proteins versus soya protein has been well documented across many academic studies. A meta-analysis of some 49 different studies (Martineau et al. 2013) showed that milk yield and dry matter intake were generally improved with rape-based feeding regimes. More specifically, pressing plants that produce (“expeller”) rapeseed protein feeds have a higher residual rapeseed oil component that increases the metabolizable energy content of the resulting feed by around 1 MJ/kg above conventional solvent extracted rapemeal. NovaPro™ is a further evolution of an expelled feed, undergoing gentle heating with a wood sugar technology that greatly improves its rumen bypass protein content. A recent controlled farm trial at the University of Nottingham further explored the benefits of incorporating NovaPro™ in rations.

In a trial in which NovaPro™ replaced soya, we witnessed an additional 1.7 litres of milk per cow per day alongside improved dry matter intake (DMI), compared to the control diets of soya and rapemeal extract. The analysis identified better amino acid balance and protein utilisation, with no significant effect on milk constituents,” says Dr Michael Marsden, Head of Innovation at Trident Feeds.

The trial demonstrated an improved MOPF of 28p/cow/day on the NovaPro™ diet,” adds Dr Marsden.

Two thirds of the UK’s protein requirements are met by imported protein sources, such as soya. However, there is increasing scrutiny from NGO’s and retailers to understand their feed supply chains and the full environmental impact of the feeds they source.

Strategically located in the heart of England near Stratford upon Avon, Yelo’s NovaPro™ production facility also generates its own heat and power renewably, from UK sourced low-grade biomass residues, making it one of the most energy and carbon-efficient production sites in the UK.

Kevin Ball, CEO of Yelo, is looking to the future: “We are proud to be championing UK farming and developing higher value products from homegrown rapeseed. We are very excited about NovaPro™, now seeing farm evidence of it successfully replacing soya in dairy rations. Furthermore, whilst we are focussing on reducing our footprint, with a carbon efficient operation, we are producing a protein feed that, in turn, helps the dairy sector improve its nitrogen efficiency,” he concludes.

About Metcalfe Farms

Washfold Farm was established by Frank Metcalfe in 1940. At that time the farm consisted of a dairy herd, numbering 20 cows. Today David, Brian and Philip Metcalfe, Frank's grandson's, along with their father John and mother Thora, have 1,300 pedigree Holstein cows on their 3,200-acre Washfold farm and adjacent farms. David, Brian and Philip run the farms and are involved in Agricultural and Haulage contracting. The most recent addition to Metcalfe Farms has been a commercial & automotive repair business, which deals with all types of vehicles. More at: www.metcalfefarms.com
